PARLIAMENT SUPPORTS UPDATE OF THE COMMUNITY’S PLAN
Five thousand Tasmanians spoke up about what matters to them and their voices have been heard.
Yesterday the Legislative Council agreed to recommendations from the Tasmania Together Progress Board to update the community’s plan. This follows agreement last week from the House of Assembly.
Bob Campbell, Chair of the independent Progress Board said: “We made recommendations to Parliament based squarely on what the community told us during our 10 Year Review. These recommendations are a direct reflection of what Tasmanians want to see happen in our State.
I am pleased that our Parliamentarians have not only valued our work but more importantly have acknowledged the importance of engaging the community in shaping Tasmania’s future.”
29 new measures will be included in the revised Tasmania Together plan. Some of the new areas for measurement include income distribution, social disorder, school attendance, infant health, homelessness, transport and renewable energy.
“The improved version of Tasmania Together will now include a number of changes that better align the plan with contemporary issues raised by the community,” said Mr Campbell. “When it is publicly released next year, it will provide not only a powerful tool that can be used to bring about change but also an opportunity for Tasmania Together to be re-invigorated.”
Over the last 10 years, Tasmania Together has built a national and international reputation for its community consultation, benchmark development, and progress reporting. While these will still be core activities for the Progress Board, greater use of the data will be encouraged over the next decade.
“The data is there to be used,” said Mr Campbell, “over the next 10 Years we will encourage key stakeholders in all sectors of the community, government and non government, to explore and use the information available to them and engage in achieving the community’s vision for our State.”
