  Arrow Featured Goal
Goal 5:   “Vibrant, inclusive and growing communities where people feel valued and connected”.

The first edition of TT eNews has focus on youth. All the goals affect young people indirectly or directly – and many include specific standards that the community wants to meet – whether that be support for young people who are at risk (goal 2); support for pre-school children to have an equal start (goal 3); or support for the participation of young people in decision-making (goal 8). However, in identifying one goal for this issue – we have chosen goal 5 because it supports a valued role in community life for Tasmania’s young people now and in the future. This focus is also behind many of the initiatives featured in this issue of TT eNews, including the Tasmania Together Youth Challenge and the Tasmanian Youth Environment Conference.

What can you do to help develop a valuable role for young people in your work place or community?

Arrow 2008 Tasmania Together Youth Challenge
The 2008 Tasmania Together Youth Challenge: Take Ctrl + Altr the future! A state-wide competition for school-aged students.

Tasmania Together wants young people to connect with Tasmania Together and so we have held a competition for all school-aged Tasmanians. The challenge asked young people to think about their vision for the future of Tasmania and how they can make a difference - and to use their creative abilities to share their vision for the future. Entries were in a range of creative and artistic formats and will be judged on quality and creativity, as well as how well the ideas are linked to Tasmania Together’s vision and goals. There are great prizes on offer, including cash, iPods and MP3 players.

  Arrow Tasmanian Youth Environment Conference
12-13 August 2008 The Tasmania Together Progress Board is pleased to be sponsoring the inaugural Tasmanian Youth Environment Conference. The Conference is being held on 12-13 August 2008 using the Firestarter - Kids Teaching Kids model. The concept is about kids acquiring the skills of research, presentation and performance in order to teach others about environmental (or other) issues. The approach aims to engage students and harness their passion – and “…use this in a way that people will be entertained, informed, moved and willing to change”. The Firestarter model has been used in other states and territories for a number of years, and has the support of the Australian Government (who is partially sponsoring the event). It has also now been picked up by the United Nations as a way of connecting students from schools all around the world, to work on Millennium Development Goals.

The Tasmanian Youth Environment Conference in Hobart will involve approximately 250 students and teachers from 30 - 40 schools across Tasmania.

In addition, it will indirectly impact on about 3000 students and teachers, through the Kids Teaching Kids workshops that will be delivered by presenting schools 5 times prior and 5 times post the conference, ensuring their messages about their local environmental projects are being spread throughout their communities (schools, parents, businesses, local government etc).

Registrations are still open for schools wanting to send delegates to the Conference.

ArrowOffice of Youth Affairs - Release of new report
Local Government Youth Services Survey Report (pdf) The Office of Youth Affairs recently released a report that provides an overview of services and facilities that are available to young people aged 12 to 25 in each Local Government Area (LGA). The Local Government Youth Services Survey Report looks at whether councils have Youth Advisory Committees and the various ways in which councils consult with young people in their area. Councils provide a number of opportunities for young people to have their say about the services and facilities available to them via these committees and other forums. Young people are encouraged to contact their Council’s Youth Development Officer to see how they can participate in decision making in their community.

LOCAL GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION OF TASMANIA Tasmania Together at the LGAT Conference

18-20 June, 2008 - Launceston

The 2008 Local Government Conference took place in Launceston in June at the Launceston Country Club. The conference, themed Waves of Change, addressed some of the key challenges Local Government faced and looked at how councils can adapt and progress towards a stronger, more sustainable future. Tasmania Together Progress Board chair, Mr Bob Campbell, provided a workshop at the conference, encouraging councils to incorporate Tasmania Together goals and benchmarks into their strategic planning processes.

Mr Campbell said “Local Government is perfectly placed to make a real impact in local communities, and to work on issues that matter to Tasmanians – the sort of issues found in Tasmania Together. Local Government can help deliver on the goals and benchmarks of the plan at the community coalface.”

The Tasmania Together Progress Board also participated in the trade exhibition, with the booth providing Tasmania Together information and promotional items.
